Visit “The District” and get up close and personal with politics. During this trip, participants will speak with current and former officials from Congress, the Department of Justice, the U.S. military, the Embassy of the United Kingdom, and the private sector. There will also be ample opportunity to explore the museums and cultural opportunities that the nation’s capital has to offer!

Alaska

This course will explore the state of Alaska in an interdisciplinary framework. Students will learn about the state’s history, geography, industries and cultural influences while experiencing firsthand the wonders that make this region unique.

New York

See the “Big Apple” through the world of theatre. As part of this course, you will have a quintessential tour New York City. Take a behind-the-scenes tour of a theatre and enjoy the iconic NYC sites, shopping, and street food.

Hawaii

The course will meet weekly for one hour in preparation for a two-week trip to the islands of Kauai, Hawaii, and Oahu either at the end of spring semester (approximately May 4-18) or around spring break. Students will interact with local, state and federal agency as well as university and NGO personnel that work in management, research and policy. On each island we will see ongoing efforts to manage invasive and endangered species as well as general conservation issues.

Prerequisites: General Ecology, Wildlife Ecology, Conservation, and Management, Forest Ecology, or Conservation Biology or consent of instructor.

South Africa

This course will explore the functions of higher education and student affairs on a local and global scale. Each week you will learn about a topic related to higher education, culminating in a trip to South Africa. There you will be given the opportunity to compare and contrast selected components of higher education while exploring the diverse cultures and natural wonders of the area.

Edinburgh and London

While there you can explore a Scottish castle, shop the Royal Mile, walk the streets of Old Town and more! Enjoy excursions to Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and the Kelpies. See sites such as Covent Garden, St Paul’s Cathedral and Big Ben. As well as day excursions to Stonehenge and a nearby country village.

The Undergraduate Research (UR) Fellowship application submission opens on January 10, 2025.

The UR Fellowship program is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to apply the knowledge they have obtained in the classroom to a research project! Students may select from a year-long, two-semester and a summer fellowship.

Starting semesters offered are Summer 2025, Fall 2025 or Spring 2026. Here are some of the testimonials from our current students:

(Engineering Students: All students applying for a fellowship in the College of Engineering must submit a brief email of intent to Apply for the Fellowship by December 16, 2024 to mla0001@auburn.edu. Visit website for details.)

Interested students should begin identifying a faculty mentor to discuss their research project with. The student and the faculty mentor who agrees to work with them will then submit a joint application using the online portal.

The Undergraduate Research Fellowship application submission will close February 15, 2025.
Fellowship award period can be up to May 1, 2026.

Apply for a $5,000 scholarship through Phi Beta Kappa

The Phi Beta Kappa Society is now accepting online applications for their Key into Public Service scholarship. The program connects undergraduate arts and sciences majors with pathways into local, state and federal government service. The Society will select 20 successful applicants who will receive $5,000 academic scholarships and will participate in an educational conference experience in Washington, D.C., that will provide them with training, mentoring and resources on pathways into public service careers. Phi Beta Kappa membership is not required, but students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA.

Characteristics of ideal recipients include intellectual curiosity, breadth and depth in arts and sciences coursework, leadership propensity and service to others. Interested students can learn more and apply online until January 21, 2025, at PBK.org/ServiceScholarsApp.

Honors College Peer Academic Coaches are dedicated to helping their peers gain the knowledge they need to succeed in the Honors College through academic coaching and mentorship. Academic Coaches help Honors students develop the skills to approach specific subject areas and courses, foster relationships between newer and more experienced students, respond to any Honors-related questions students might have and guide students to helpful academic resources when needed.

Third Thursday Poetry Series: Rajiv Mohabir

November 21 | 7 p.m. | Pebble Hill

Rajiv Mohabir is an Indo-Caribbean American author of three acclaimed poetry collections, The Taxidermist’s Cut, Cowherd’s Son, Cutlish and Whale Aria; a book of translation, I Even Regret Night; and his hybrid memoir, Antiman. Rajiv is currently a professor at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Refreshments and book sales by Auburn Oil Co. Booksellers will be available at 6 p.m; the reading will begin at 6:30 p.m.
